Living in Renton. The south shore.
Renton holds the southern shoreline of Lake Washington, where 737s roll off the Boeing line a short walk from waterfront restaurants at The Landing. Living in Renton, WA means big job markets on three sides, a real downtown of its own, and neighborhoods at nearly every price point in between.
Living here
The north end is the showpiece. Kennydale climbs the hillside above the lake, and the best streets trade in views of the water and the Seattle skyline. Down at the shore, Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park runs a swimming beach, a boat launch, and more than a mile of waterfront paths, with The Landing's shops and the Southport development next door. The Cedar River cuts through downtown past the municipal airport, and the Cedar River Trail follows it from the lake mouth upstream toward Maple Valley.
East of downtown, the Renton Highlands spread across the plateau: established postwar blocks near the older core, newer subdivisions and townhomes as you push east toward May Valley. Benson Hill and the Cascade area in the southeast carry much of the city's value, with solid mid-century houses on quiet streets where first-time buyers still get in the door. Renton Hill sits just above downtown with some of the city's oldest homes and its best sightlines.
The paychecks are local, which is rare out here. Boeing builds every 737 at its plant on the lake, the Seahawks train at their headquarters on the shoreline, Wizards of the Coast is headquartered in town, and UW Medicine's Valley Medical Center anchors the healthcare side along with Providence's administrative offices. Plenty of people who live in Renton also work in Renton.
Who it fits
Split-commute households with one job in Seattle and one on the Eastside: Renton sits at the hinge between the two. Aerospace and healthcare workers who want to live minutes from the plant or the hospital. First-time buyers working Benson Hill and the Highlands, and view buyers who want Lake Washington without Seattle or Bellevue prices.

Getting around
I-405 runs right through the city, with SR-167 peeling south toward Kent and Auburn, SR-169 heading up the Cedar River valley to Maple Valley, and SR-900 crossing east toward Issaquah. Bellevue is about 15 minutes up 405 outside of rush hour, downtown Seattle about 20 via I-5, and Sea-Tac Airport roughly 15 minutes west. There is no train station in the city itself: the RapidRide F Line connects downtown Renton and The Landing to the Sounder and Link light rail in Tukwila, and a rebuilt Renton Transit Center broke ground in 2026 to serve Sound Transit's Stride bus rapid transit line along I-405 to Bellevue and Burien, with service planned for 2028.
