Living in Port Orchard. The county seat on the water.
Kitsap County's seat sits on the south shore of Sinclair Inlet, looking straight across the water at Bremerton and the shipyard. Living in Port Orchard gets you a real 1890s downtown, a marina at the foot of Bay Street, and some of the most attainable close-to-the-water homes in the Sound. That mix keeps pulling in shipyard families, ferry commuters, and buyers priced out of the east side of the water.
Living here
Downtown Port Orchard, WA is the original townsite, platted as Sidney in the 1880s and the county seat since the 1890s. Bay Street runs along the water with antique shops, pubs, the Sidney Museum, and a summer farmers market by the marina. The streets climb the hill behind it, so a lot of the older housing stock comes with inlet views: bungalows and mid-century homes on compact lots, many waiting for the right owner to update them.
The west side is where Port Orchard is growing. McCormick Woods is the city's master-planned community: an 18-hole golf course cut through fir and cedar, miles of trails, and street after street of newer craftsman-style construction, with active building still adding phases. McCormick Village Park anchors it with a splash pad, dog park, and loop trail. East and south of town the lots get bigger: established neighborhoods around East Port Orchard, lake life at Long Lake, and quiet rural pockets rolling out toward Manchester and Olalla.
Parks are a quiet strength here. South Kitsap Regional Park covers more than 200 acres of ballfields and forested trails, complete with a rideable miniature railroad run by the Kitsap Live Steamers. Manchester State Park sits a short drive northeast on the shoreline, and the waterfront boardwalk downtown puts the water a few steps from your errands.
Who it fits
Shipyard and Navy families are the backbone: the foot ferry drops you at Bremerton's gates in minutes, no bridge traffic involved. Seattle commuters use the Southworth ferries a few miles east. First-time buyers land here because the money goes further than almost anywhere else this close to the water, and new-construction buyers get real choices at McCormick. Retirees and downsizers like the marina, the small downtown, and a pace that stays unhurried.

Getting around
The Kitsap Transit foot ferry crosses Sinclair Inlet to downtown Bremerton in about 10 to 12 minutes, running all day with extra weekday sailings for shipyard shifts. From Bremerton you can connect to the fast ferry or the state ferry to downtown Seattle. Prefer the east route: SR-160 reaches the Southworth terminal in about 15 minutes, where Washington State Ferries runs to Fauntleroy in West Seattle and Kitsap Transit's weekday fast ferry runs to downtown Seattle in about half an hour. By road, SR-16 puts Gig Harbor about 20 minutes away and Tacoma across the Narrows in roughly 35, and the drive around the inlet to Bremerton takes about 15.
