Living in Belfair. The head of Hood Canal.
Belfair is the unincorporated hub of north Mason County, sitting right where the Union River empties into the head of Hood Canal. It is the town with the grocery store, the hardware store, and the schools for a huge stretch of saltwater and timber, and living in Belfair puts real waterfront within reach of a Puget Sound Naval Shipyard paycheck.
Living here
The town itself runs along Highway 3: shops, restaurants, the QFC with the park and ride behind it, and the North Mason school campuses a short hop off the highway. A mile south, the Theler Wetlands wrap the Union River estuary with 139 acres of protected marsh and about three and a half miles of boardwalk and trail, one of the best birding spots in the state. It is the kind of place locals walk before work while herons work the tide flats.
The water is the draw. North Shore Road follows the canal west past Belfair State Park, 94 acres of beach and tide flats where families swim and dig clams, out toward Tahuya and the Tahuya State Forest's trail network. South Shore Road runs the other bank toward Twanoh State Park and Union. Both shores carry generations of housing: original cabins, cedar-sided 1970s and 80s waterfront, and custom rebuilds on no-bank beach with their own tidelands. Communities like Beards Cove add plat neighborhoods with beach access.
Away from the salt water, the woods hide freshwater lake communities at Mission, Tiger, and Panther lakes, plus plenty of acreage on quiet gravel roads. The overall stock is a true mix: manufactured homes on wooded lots, older ramblers, newer builds near town, and waterfront that runs from teardown cabin to trophy. That range is exactly why buyers with very different budgets all end up house hunting in Belfair, WA.

Shipyard and Naval Base Kitsap workers who want trees and tide flats instead of a subdivision: Bremerton is about 13 miles up Highway 3. Buyers priced out of Kitsap and Gig Harbor who still want land or water. Retirees and remote workers chasing quiet, oysters at low tide, and a boat launch nearby. And weekend-cabin buyers, because Hood Canal here is still some of the most attainable saltwater frontage on Puget Sound.
Getting around
Highway 3 is the spine: Bremerton and the shipyard are about 13 miles north, roughly 20 to 25 minutes when the Gorst chokepoint behaves, and it is honest to say Gorst backs up at shift change. SR-300 branches out to Belfair State Park and North Shore Road, while SR-106 follows the south shore toward Union. Gig Harbor is about 25 miles and Tacoma about 35 via Highway 3 and SR-16. For Seattle, most people drive to Bremerton and ride the Washington State Ferry across, about an hour on the water. Mason Transit's Route 3 links the Belfair park and ride to the Bremerton ferry terminal for car-free commuting.
