Living in Shelton. The Sound's western edge.
Shelton is the only incorporated city in Mason County, the county seat, and the westernmost city on Puget Sound, set where Hammersley Inlet opens into Oakland Bay. It grew up on timber and oysters, and both still run the working end of town. Olympia sits about 20 miles down US 101, which makes living in Shelton one of the most attainable footholds on the Sound.
Living here
Downtown runs along Railroad Avenue, where the old Simpson mill offices, the Mason County Courthouse, and a locally protected historic district keep the timber-town bones intact. The close-in neighborhoods, Hillcrest and Angleside among them, are full of homes built for mill families in the 1920s: modest footprints, real wood, walkable blocks with water and forest at the end of the street. Green Diamond Resource Company still operates from its downtown offices, so the heritage is not a museum piece.
North Shelton along Wallace Kneeland Boulevard carries the everyday retail: Walmart, Fred Meyer, and most of the newer subdivision growth. For green space you have Kneeland Park's ponds and playfields in town, the Huff-N-Puff Trail's forested loop across from the high school, and Walker Park on Hammersley Inlet a few minutes east. The Port of Shelton runs the Oakland Bay Marina, and Shelton-based Taylor Shellfish still farms the tideflats that made this bay famous for oysters.
This is a working city. Sierra Pacific Industries runs a modern sawmill here, Mason Health operates the county's hospital, the Washington Corrections Center employs a large state workforce just outside town, and the Squaxin Island Tribe's Little Creek Casino Resort at Kamilche is one of the county's biggest employers. Paychecks come from real industries, and housing prices still reflect that.

Who it fits
First-time buyers who got priced out of Olympia and Thurston County, state workers who can trade 30 minutes on US 101 for a real house payment, and anyone who wants Puget Sound water, Olympic foothills, and a small city where you learn the checker's name at the grocery store. Retirees like the pace and the hospital in town. Land buyers use Shelton as the service hub for acreage all over Mason County.
Getting around
US 101 is the spine: about half an hour southeast to Olympia and the I-5 interchange, north up the Hood Canal shore toward the Olympic Peninsula. SR 3 splits off toward Belfair and Bremerton, putting the PSNS shipyard within a commutable 45 minutes to an hour. Tacoma runs about an hour via 101 and SR 3 or through Olympia. Mason Transit Authority is the local wild card: the buses are currently fare free, and Route 6 runs all day on weekdays between the Transit-Community Center downtown and the Olympia Transit Center, with commuter connections toward Bremerton as well.
